Biking in Toronto

Today we decided to use the Bike Share Toronto to get around. Once you join up you are allowed unlimited 30-minute bike rides. We joined up for one day. Once we reached the waterfront Don struggled with the dispensing machine until it relinquished two bikes for us.
We rode along the Lake Shore Boulevardfor quite a while. It was good to ride again. Then we returned and looked at the Toronto Music Garden.

It was designed in collaboration with cellist Yo-Yo Ma.

It expresses Bach’s Suite No 1 for Unaccompanied Cello.

The landscape has a swirling path through a wildflower meadow.

Note the colourful spurge!

There was an arc-shaped grove of conifers.

And a grass-stepped amphitheatre where concerts can be held.

It was very peaceful.

After lunch we had another ride to the Spandina Quay wetlands. A small area on the harbour front that the city has transformed back into wetlands for birds, frogs, fish and butterflies.

These red-winged black birds live in the wetlands.

We hopped back on the Hop on Hop off bus and headed back up the other end of town to see Queen’s Park. On the way I noticed that the Stay-Puff Marshmallow Man which had been outside the Sony Centre had disappeared.

Queen’s Park has an amazing building which has Ontario’s Government.

Some excitement! Tonight while we were having dinner the fire alarm went off. Three fire trucks turned up and the alarm went on for ages. It was a false alarm. It didn’t affect us but apparently the elevators were out of action so those living in the 30 or so floors above would have been stranded.
