Columbia Icefield

We booked a tour to walk on a glacier and needed to catch the bus in town at 8.45am so another early start as we are about one and a half kilometres out of town. We ended up being half an hour early and they were late. Our first stop was a very fast and noisy waterfall.

As we rose higher and higher we got our first glimpse of glaciers in the snow covered mountains.

We heard stories of the first explorers and the difficulties they faced.

After a lovely lunch we were driven to the transfer station where we transferred into a vehical designed to travel through thegravel moraine and over the ice.

They gave us cups so we could drink some of the glacial water. It was delicious and very cold.

As you can see it was quite windy and I used the coat Tandy had lent me.

We had our photo taken.

And a photo taken with the Australian flag which was flying there along with many others.

There were quite a few groups of people on the ice.

The boundaries showing which area is safe are clearly marked and lots of melt water gushes down.

Finally we returned to the vehicle which drove us back to the bus.

Our next attraction was the SkyWalk. This is a glass bottomed walk way which swings out over ravine below which has been made by the glacier.

Don was fine with walking out over the SkyWalk. Some others stayed on the concrete pathway. It was a long way down to the bottom!

Look at the wall of ice on top of this mountain.
