More Louvring

IT WAS TIME TO BUY MORE MUSEUM PASSES, a coffee, a pleasantly quick queue and back to see more of the Louvre. This time we entered from under the fountains and glass pyramid.

Armed with an audio guide and the iPod app we wandered through the art works from Flanders, the Netherlands, Germany and France. Away from the main attractions, the halls were almost deserted, so we could actually spend time with the paintings.

The lacemaker by Vermeer.

There was a whole room full of large Rubens depicting the life of Marie de Medici, queen of Henry IV, regent and mother of Louis XXIII. Great propaganda, given that critics suspected her of assassinating her husband and her later sponsorship of an inept rebellion against her son. Still, good setting for the three musketeers ...

After a lovely lunch outside overlooking the Louvre entrance we looked at the Napoleon III apartments, furniture and ceramics.

High level OTT: lead light glass and wood chair and mirror.

We glanced at a few sculptures.

Finally we looked at the history of the Louvre, from it's origins as a medieval fortress.
