Forget the Heathrow express this time; we went back via the boring old Picadilly line and turned up to pick up the car at 11.30 but they were understaffed and overwhelmed, meaning a long wait before could drive away in our little red car, about two hours later than we planned.
Never mind: we were lost within five minutes trying to leave Heathrow using the basic maps provided.
Before we tried to negotiate the motorway maze near Birmingham, we picked up the large format AA map book, on special at the WH Smith at a service station. No longer did we feel under the hammer, as it were ...
Once off the motorways, it was beautiful rural driving across into Snowdonia and finally down the coast road ...
