Brú na Bóinne - prehistoric passage tombs

OLDER THAN STONEHENGE. Or perhaps that was the result of overpriced G&Ts the previous evening. Despite that, we were away before 8.00 and fifth in the queue to see the spectacular passage tombs (or ceremonial sites, or whatever Tony Robinson concludes at the end of the show...) in the Boyne Valley.

First we visited Knowth. We looked at the massive kerbstones carved with symbols and looked into one of the passages leading into the large mound.

Sorry this is still sideways!

Then on to Newgrange where we walked, ducked, and slithered into the middle of the mound. Spectacular when the guide turned off the light to show us how the rising sun at winter solstice illuminated the tomb chamber floor.

We moved on to the ruins of the Old Mellifont Abbey.

And finally we visited a cemetery to see old Celtic Crosses and a tower for hiding from Vikings. As you do.
