Vacation in Venice!

INTO THE BACK SEAT BY 7.45 MEANT PLENTY OF NAP TIME as we drove around Bologna and to Venice. Our hotel is an 18th century villa, some 30 minutes up canal and on the mainland, just outside Venice.

Our room has a painted ceiling and a glass chandelier .

Of course the bathroom also had a chandelier, which is what you need to counterpoint the gilt taps.

After a quick lunch, we drove into Venice proper; there is a 1920s road and rail bridge to a new part of the island, with a five story parking lot and station.

Then it was onto the 'water bus' for a trip down the grand canal ... As Mario put it, as busy as Bourke Street.

We stopped at St Marks to visit the cathedral and admire the Doge's palace, while sitting in the piazza, listening to the little orchestra play and sipping kir and G&T, knowing that someone, somewhere, was getting quite rich as a result.

Julie payed €31 for a glass of champagne (plus another €6 for the band). She was not really impressed.

This church is an amazing mix of Byzantine and Romanesque, with lots of mosaics. The floor is uneven showing where some of the wooden poles supporting the building have rotted, and where one column collapsed.

There a fewer gondolas now, but still some singing gondoliers!

Our crew having a gondola ride.

We caught the ferry back to pick up the bus from one of the stops like the Rialto below.

And then it was back to the villa for another solid dinner ... Polenta, tagliatelle and a fine sweet.
