Pesaro and Gradara castle

MARIO'S FAMILY HAVE A RESIDENCE IN PESARO, so an extended walk around the walled town was an extended invitation to share his pleasure in it.

A famous ceramic artist lived and worked in this villa.

He unfortunately died when this amazing piece of Medusa commissioned for a 1925 exhibition crushed him during unloading.

We saw ceramic artists at work, painting the glazes.

We went to his Mario's cousin's bookshop, which sells rare and old books as well as a wide range of new books. Don was in book heaven though he will need to learn to read Italian!

We took a stroll down to the beach to look at all the beach divided up. You have to hire a beach umbrella for the season, or for a week, or for an afternoon, so you can have some space on the beach.

After an afternoon siesta we visited the castle of Gradara.

It was renovated in the early 20th century by an engineer who then devoted his whole life to fixing it up. His wife bequeathed it to the state when she died. Shades of Ireland...

This castle was the site for the romantic tale of Francesca da Rimini, doomed to the first circle of hell in Dante's Inferno. Personally, I blame Lancelot.

We walked the battlements.

And gathered some wise words from our leader.

We had a lovely meal in the castle grounds.

The castle lit up at night.
